September Whole30

Whole 30Now that it’s September 1st, I’ve decided to turn over a new leaf and get back to the basics.  I’ve committed myself to doing Whole30  and if I’m being honest, I’m actually really excited about it.  For those of you who haven’t heard of Whole30, it’s 30 days of eating real, unprocessed, and nutritionally dense food. Which means for the next month, I’ll be avoiding grains, added sugars, soy, dairy, beans, legumes, and treats and replacing them with healthy and natural foods.

I had been kicking around trying the Whole30 program for quite some time but I wasn’t ready to commit and really do it.  I’m not sure exactly what changed, but over the past month I started thinking about it and it just felt like the time was right.  I’m a little nervous, but also excited. I’m most looking forward to resetting my body and changing the way I think about and eat food.  Over the past few years, I know I’ve developed some baddd habits that it’s time to kick.  With that being said, I know this isn’t going to be a walk in the park.  I’ve quickly realized that food manufacturers put sugar in  e v e r y t h i n g  not even joking.  Bacon, spices, pasta sauce, don’t believe me? Go check your pantry, sugar is snuck into a disgusting amount of things.  I also realize I’m going to be avoiding some of my favorite foods: dairy, bread, cheese, etc..  but honestly the thing I’m most anxious about avoiding is gum.. ha – I love my gum!

I’m sure there will be highs and lows but I know I can do it;  30 days is nothing in the grand scheme of things.  I’m already all set with our food for the week and I’m excited for everything that’s on the menu:  I made a breakfast casserole by slightly tweaking this recipe, I made two substitutions just based on personal preferences- using turkey sausage and adding in some baby spinach.  Let me tell you, when I took that bad boy out of the oven it smelled amazing; I cannot wait for breakfast tomorrow!   Tomorrow for lunch, I’m planning on enjoying a BLT lettuce wrap, and swapping out the mayo for avocado. Then I’ve got a full week’s worth the tasty and compliant dinners planned.   If you want to follow along, I’ll be Instagramming some of my favorite meals using the hashtag #stephdoeswhole30

PS: Cotton Candy Grapes are the bees knees.  I saw them on Instagram the other day, and literally jumped for joy today in Mariano’s when I spotted them.  Go get yourself some!
